What to do when you arrive

Arrive 10–15 minutes early if you want coffee and a chance to meet people. Come to the church and look for AA signs. Sit wherever you like. If someone greets you, you can say you are new. That is enough.

  • No appointment or registration.
  • No dues or fees. A basket may be passed; you are welcome whether or not you put anything in it.
  • You do not have to talk. Listening is participation.
  • If you cannot find the room, email [email protected] or wait a few minutes.

What the hour is like

This is an open Big Book discussion. We read from Alcoholics Anonymous (the Big Book) and talk about what we read. On the last Saturday of the month it is a lead discussion: a 30-minute speaker, then discussion.

Family and friends who want to see what AA is may attend because the meeting is open. If you later want a closed meeting (generally for people who have a desire to stop drinking), charlotteaa.org lists those separately.

What you do not need

You do not need to be sober a certain number of days. You do not need a referral from a treatment center. You do not need to believe in God the way someone else does. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking. Showing up is how most people start.
